Year 2019 marks 108-year of excellence for Sea Scouting across the world since the founder, Henry Warington Smyth Baden Powell presented his idea in London back in January 1911. Warington, the elder brother of Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell (Lord B-P), the founder of Scouting Movement, was a man who has passion in seamanship and water activities. He started his career as a merchant marine, the founder of canoe sailing and built his own small sail ship, Diamond. As Lord B-P saw the needs of forming a special sea unit in Scouting for coastal and island areas, he asked for his brother's assistance to draft a blueprint for this new division.
After 1911, a lot of Scouts troop shifted to Sea Scouting. In 1930's, Sea Scouting reached Malaysia and started to expand. Malaysia, both East (Sabah and Sarawak) and West (Semenanjung Tanah Melayu) has a very long coastal area where people normally will do something associate to the sea, whether as economic activities or as leisure. Nowadays, almost all the states in Malaysia have Sea Scouts.
Sea Scouts activities like boating, rafting, kayaking, sailing, swimming, lifesaving, diving, marine life conservation, snorkeling, fishing, sea survival, navigation, weather forecasting and many more are indeed very enjoyable and can increase our awareness towards the elements of safety. Each activity will also pull us closer to the beauty of nature and transform us to be a more skillful person as time goes on.
Kuala Lumpur is the only Scouting state in Malaysia without any coastal area and is totally landlocked. This constraint, however, is not a limitation for KL Sea Scout to move forward.
